Casa Munras

Doing a little research on Monterey, CA and found a really cute hotel. I poked around on Flickr and found some fabulous photos of the shore and am actually getting excited for a little California trip. Oh, and this place has a spa package - YES!! Now lets just hope I can find a good price on flights!

United makes it right

Woke up to this letter in my email box this morning...

Dear Ms. Fevurly:

Our Refunds department forwarded us your email regarding the inconvenience you experienced when your baggage did not arrive with you in Saginaw.  I am sorry for the trouble you experienced and that you did not have your presentation materials or suitable clothing for your meeting.

I know that when United fails to deliver the service you anticipate you doubt our desire to be an airline you can count on.  You expect a dependable and easy travel experience. And be assured that we will meet this goal as we refine our quality standards and procedures.  Your good comments will help us focus on specific areas that will make your travel more enjoyable.

Please know that your business is important to us.  While I can’t undo the circumstances you experienced, I have included an electronic travel certificate as a gesture of goodwill. We hope that you will give us another opportunity to better meet your needs in the future.

Sincerely,

Customer Relations

This was completely unexpected since they had already processed my $20 refund for the lost bag.  I thought that was the end of it and that the rest of my letter went into the void.  Glad to see they are listening to their customers!

I finally found a way to process these photos! They were horribly flat because it was a horrible gray day. I am trying to find new ways and work flows to better my processing. I used to hear that if you shoot RAW you can bring back even the worst of photos... slowly but surely I'm learning.

so yeah...

Horrible day today.

Didn't sleep for sh*t last night - always tough when you're in another time zone.  Up at the crack of ass dawn.  Trip to Kinko's to get the reprints of what was in my bag for my presentation.  Rushed through breakfast only to get to the meeting and hour early.  Better early than late, but these time zone changes with calendar invites annoy me!  We never seem to have it right.  Rushed through the meeting and didn't even cover all of our topics.  Rushed to clean up for another meeting right after ours - we had every inch of wall covered in paper and material samples on the tables.... rush, rush, rush.  And yes, all of this was done in the same clothes I was in yesterday.  My skin felt itchy from my crappy Target toiletries and I just felt like a mess.

My bag never made it out of O'Hare.  Joy!

Chewy chicken for lunch (ick!), delayed flight and then major negotiations once I was back at O'Hare to get my bag back.  I called this morning and spoke with one of the United reps in India (or wherever they are) and instructed him to have my bag left in Chicago since there was no record scan of it ever leaving.  No sense in delivering it to another city when I'll be back in Chicago today.  I spent 45 minutes negotiating with two women at the baggage counter and another 20 while they tried to locate my bag.  They were initially wanting me to leave without the bag, but with my persistence and the help of one guy, they finally called "down to the ramp" to have them actually look for my bag.

Success, finally!  I will never understand how airports work.  The whole system is frustrating from the minute you get there till the minute you leave.

  • cost of parking (daily or economy - ridiculous)
  • number of bags you can carry on the plane
  • size of bags you can carry on the plane
  • paying extra money for checking baggage they won't allow on the plane
  • time you have to be at the airport before your flight
  • time it takes to get through security
  • city/TSA employees with unnecessary attitude
  • disrobing at security
  • people who still don't know how to navigate security
  • the quart baggie and the quest to find small tubes for strategic packing in this baggie
  • inconsistency in rules - all around
  • cost of food and beverages
  • the boarding process
  • sitting on the runway waiting your turn because of air traffic
  • time it takes to get your bag if you've checked a bag
  • God forbid there's a problem... then you're really in for it

If I never had to travel for my job, I wouldn't.  If I didn't love seeing new cities and other parts of the world, I wouldn't.  If I didn't hate road trips, I wouldn't.  Flying is a necessary evil for me.  If only we could go back to post 9/11 days.... travel could actually be enjoyable again.

To end this on a positive note... good things today.  KU killed Mizzou!  Rock Chalk!  Starbucks peppermint hot chocolate, kitty lovin's and a post flight shower .... Listening to Miles Davis and Maxwell to find my happy place.  Ahhhh, time for bed!

I figured I would use my week at home to finish up my photo editing from Paris and Amsterdam. I have SO many photos to edit it's been quite a chore. I'd like to make a book and in order to do that, I have to get everything edited and in one place. Not sure why I've been so scattered with this photo journey, but I have a whole week to reorganize!

sunday fun day

Made another trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum today with Barbara and her mother. I had seen a photo on Flickr of the painted ribs and was itching to shoot those myself.

Traffic sucked getting there, and I picked "kids" day, but it all worked out and we had a great time walking around viewing the collection. This is the first time I've actually seen the whole collection on the main floor - still haven't seen everything upstairs. They really do have some nice work and the Warhol exhibit was quite good.

We hit another Wisconsin favorite, the Mars Cheese Castle for cheese and more. This was my first visit and I was quite surprised at the size of this place. It's a grocery, bakery, wine shop, gift shop and even has a restaurant/bar! I picked up some smoked cheddar that is so strong it's made the whole fridge smell smokey. Mmmmm.

The final stop on our way home was at the Baha'i House of Worship. I attempted a few handheld shots, should have upped the ISO, while we walked around and enjoyed the gardens and the amazing architecture. This place is simply stunning. The ornate work both inside and out is something you really must see. I will have to take a tripod back to get some proper shots of this place. I'm loving the fountains. Maybe I'll put that on the list to do this weeks since it's supposed to be of normal temperatures for this time of year!!

I know it seems like the photos from Paris are endless... that's because they are. I took a ton and am still working my way through processing them. Just started on Amsterdam last night. That's the problem with being "into" photography, you're never happy with what comes out of the camera. A little tweak here and there to get it just right. Ugh!

I'll probably make a book out of these, any suggestions on services? I've used Blurb (good except for black and white images), Apple via iPhoto (was actually impressed with that one) and My Publisher (turned out really nice, but I'm bound to templates)... any others??

This shot was taken for Karen who was just loving the moody moon with the clouds and the sign. She couldn't capture it with her point & shoot, so I sat the tripod down and shot a few frames.  I am pretty happy with how it came out.  I hope she is too...
